Where are you from?
I'm from Wales, specifically Gorseinon near Swansea. Now I live in Brecon, previously in London and Madrid.

Tell us your latest news?
I've just finished translating a Spanish novel into English about the harsh post-Civil War period. Called "Paper Spurs" it should be out in 2008. Now I'm hoping to finish my second novel.

When and why did you begin writing?
I suppose like many writers we are primarily readers who one day think to ourselves: "I can do that!" Then we give it a go. With me it happened about six years ago.
 
When did you first consider yourself a writer?
Really only very recently when people started to introduce me to others by saying "... he's a writer." A case of we are what others say of us, rather than "I am what I say" as in the Sartrean sense.
What inspired you to write your first book?
1: My childhood in transitional industrial/post-industrial South Wales and its political and economical upheavals. 2: Hoping to make a few bob.
 
How did you come up with the title Luggage from Elsewhere?
Somewhere in the novel I suggest that memories can be like luggage we have to carry around, sometimes weighing us down, immobile. Also the narrator's father suggests that Wales doesn't exist, at least not in the here and now. So the idea is if Wales is not here it is elsewhere; so memories from somewhere else is what is implied. Equally, thinking about it now, it could have been called "Luggage from Nowhere" (perhaps even "Excess Baggage" if it were to be too long!).
 
What books have most influenced your life most?
See below for the "favourite author" answer.
 
If you had to choose, which writer would you consider a mentor?
I've thought long and hard about this over the last few minutes and I can't think of anyone, sorry. If only I'd been on a creative writing course!
What book are you reading now?
The Counterlife by Philip Roth (Vintage 2005) – part of his Zuckerman series: novels about being a novelist. Not genre subject matter that appeals to me but then I only picked it out thinking the title referred to working in a shop.
Are there any new authors that have grasped your interest?
Rachel Trezise with her "In and Out of the Goldfish Bowl" and "Fresh Apples" on life now for the young in the Welsh Valleys.
 
What are your current projects?
I'm finishing off a novel set in present day Madrid, it's turning out to be a tragic love story, provisionally titled "Foreign Languages" ("Lost in Translation" was vaguely a possibility but then that film came out a few years ago).
 
What do you see as the influences on your writing?
Memory as much as imagination as a starting point... I try to write about the human condition in a down-to-earth sort of way; about alienation, meaning – if that's not too pretentious a feat.
 
Who is your favourite author and what is it that really strikes you about their work?
Not so much a favourite author, rather favourite works. Some examples that come to mind: The Tin Drum by Gunter Grass (about coming-of-age and then staying there), The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy (India, Anglo-Indian, castes, beautifully and intelligently constructed), Portrait of the Artist as a Young Dog by Dylan Thomas (full of poetic metaphor), Chronicle of a Death Foretold by Gabriel Garcia Marquez (knowing the end at the beginning but still gripping), American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis (a powerful criticism of superficial consumerism), Auto-de-Fé by Elias Canetti (a zany account of the rise of Nazism). Note: all the above works have nothing in common, it seems to me at the moment; perhaps they are books I would have liked to have been able to write or come close to writing like.
 
Did you have to travel much concerning your book?
Only mental journeys back to my childhood and adolescence to recapture time and place as a starting point, plus the occasional bus ride to the library to check a fact.
 
What was the hardest part of writing your book?
1: Finding the time when needing to earn a living (I wrote it in Spain over three years). 2: Putting commas in the right places.
 
Do you have any advice for other writers?
Don't be put off when asked: "Is it autobiographical?" - especially when you've just explained it's about thirteenth century China.
 
Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?
Nothing specific no, perhaps how life can be shitty and wonderful and all at the same time. Let's see, here's a random quote from Luggage from Elsewhere as I pick it up and let it open on any page:
'Always groping at me like a drunken gorilla lost in the dark. You've no idea. You never turned me on, you impotent dick but I bet you went boast­ing to all your mates. What? Four or five times, one after another, was it? I used to pretend, just had to moan a little and you thought you were superman. Pathetic!'
