Naomi Alderman was born in 1974 and was brought up in the Orthodox Jewish Community in Hendon, where she now lives. She is a graduate from Oxford University where she studied for a BA in Philosophy, Politics and Economics and a graduate of the UEA writing course. Naomi won The Sunday Times Young Writer of the Year 2007 Award, the David Higham Award at UEA, and has also won an Asham Award. Disobedience won the Orange Prize for New Writers 2006, and was shortlisted for The Glen Dimplex Award 2006.
Susanna Clarke was born in Nottingham in 1959. She was educated at St Hilda's College, Oxford, and has worked in various areas of non-fiction publishing, including Gordon Fraser and Quarto. After working abroad she returned to England in 1992 and spent the rest of that year in County Durham, in a house that looked out over the North Sea. There she began working on her first novel, Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell, published in October 2004. Susanna's latest book The Ladies of Grace Adieu was published in 2006. Susanna lives in Cambridge with her partner, the novelist and reviewer Colin Greenland.
Siobhan Dowd was born of Irish parents and raised in a South London suburb. After studying classics at Oxford University, Siobhan worked for PEN in the UK and at the PEN American Centre in New York, during which time she was named one of the 'top 100 Irish-Americans' by Irish America Magazine. A Swift Pure Cry (2004) was inspired by two shocking events that occurred in Ireland in 1984; the tragic death of Ann Lovett, and; the case of 'the Kerry Babies'. Jasper Fforde worked in the film industry for 13 years where his varied career included the role of 'focus puller' on films such as Goldeneye, The Mask of Zorro and Entrapment. The Icarus Girl was featured on the BBC Page Turners programme and was shortlisted for a British Book Award. It has been adapted for the stage and was performed at the Arcola theatre in Dalston. The Icarus Girl has been published in 18 countries. Since graduating from Cambridge University, Helen has spent time working in Africa and has just won a creative writing fellowship from Columbia University in the United States.

Born near Melton Mowbray in 1973, she studied Home Economics at Liverpool John Moores University, before working behind the scenes for the likes of Gary Rhodes and Gordon Ramsay. Jo is now a regular favourite on Daily Cooks, Saturday Cooks, Great Food Live and Taste. She is also food editor for Glamour magazine, and has previously written for Elle, Olive and BBC Good Food. He is now a member of the Oxford University history faculty and associate fellow of the Rothermere American Institute, Oxford. His first book, a biography of the American politician Eugene McCarthy, was published in the US in 2004. Never Had it so Good, the first volume in his history of post-war Britain, was published in 2005. The sequel, White Heat, covering the 1960s, was published a year later to similar acclaim. He writes for The Evening Standard, BBC History Magazine and reviews regularly for The Daily Telegraph. He lives in North Oxfordshire.

He is married with four young children and works as a freelance copywriter. Nick Stone was born in Cambridge in 1966. His father is the historian Norman Stone, and his mother descends from one of Haiti's oldest families, the Aubrys - some of his later relatives actually worked for Francois 'Papa Doc' Duvalier, Haiti's most notorious dictator. Nick spent his early years in Haiti, before returning to England in 1971 to finish his schooling. As a teenager, he took up boxing and fought in the National Amateur League, but gave it up when he won a place to read history at Cambridge. It was during a year spent in Haiti in the 90s that the plot for Mr Clarinet first began to take shape. He is married and lives in London.

She moved to Brighton at the age of 19 where she worked on music festivals before running a nightclub for a year, then eventually working for a building society. After completing a foundation course in creative writing at Sussex University and then a Masters Degree in Creative Writing, Brethren - the first in a trilogy - was published in 2006. The second, Crusade, is due out later this year. She lives in Brighton.
